self drafted t shirt

DOES THIS T-SHIRT MAKE ME LOOK OLD?

Well, it was bound to happen sooner or later. I just thought it would be later. Like, much, much later. Like in my eighties, later. Last week, at the Sally Ann, I was cheerfully asked if the senior’s discount applied to my purchase me! Really? No. Really? Whaaaaatt? And! To make the whole experience just a little more memorable, I was buying one item, a t-shirt for $1.99. My senior’s saving? Twenty cents. Sigh…I guess it’s all good. At least I can say that’s one of those firsts that’s done, finis, completo…you know, like the first time I was addressed as Ma’am. Or the first time I was asked if I needed help out with my groceries. I’ve lived through it. It wasn’t so bad. And to be honest, at the time I thought it was funny. Of course, I did. NOT. see it coming. at. all. The incident occurred while I was out on my lunch hour, and I’ll tell ya, as the afternoon wore on, I did become a little indigent about the whole thing. My colleagues were appropriately outraged along with me…at least when they weren’t laughing. That evening, the mister…well he belly laughed out loud. {I love this man!} He opined that the clerk was obviously of the age where EVERY one over thirty is old. Not true; I swear the woman that asked was older than I. The other big question? What exactly is the magic number for the coveted 10% discount? In the interest of reporting with integrity, I did check to find out exactly what the age is for eligibility for a seniors’ discount. I mean, what if it was forty? No, it’s not forty, but we all knew that. Six Zero. Sixty. That is the age, whereupon one is eligible for a senior’s discount. I guess I’m relieved it’s not sixty-five. Why me? I dunno. Maybe it was random. Or. Maybe every eleventy hundredth person gets asked regardless of how young or old they look. Or. Maybe, just maybe, I look sixty. Okay, I’ve had my rant. I intend no offense to those sixty or better. I actually look forward to being sixty and better. Just not today.

Now, can I please chat about my t-shirt? First up, about that $1.99 t-shirt bought at that place. It was with the sole intent of transforming it into a pattern. {It became a lesson in humility, but I digress.} Anyhoo, I bought a t-shirt that fit just right, and then I carefully cut it apart and drafted a pattern from it. Just a basic tee. Nothing fancy. Design tweaks can happen down the road after I’ve test driven knit fabrics a few times. I have sewn them before, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been behind that wheel. So far I’ve made two tees; this one and a plain white one, and I’m pleased with how they’ve turned out. The fit is good, the stripes match up pretty good, it’s pretty much all good. I stabilized the shoulder seams and neckline with Stay-Tape, and I stabilized the hems with knit interfacing. I used a twin needle on the hems. I also used a twin needle around the neckline, but, I think in future, I might just sew a single row of stitching. The double row of stitching around the neckline ribbing almost makes the white tee look like a man’s undershirt. errgg. This isn’t a super creative make, but it’s supremely comfortable, and if I can find fun cotton jersey knits, there will be more me-made t-shirts in my future.

It’s been a busy week or two here…since I saw you last, the mister and I have been to see Wicked! Live theatre is a favourite pastime for us, and we really, really enjoyed the show. I’ve also been outdoors potting red geraniums with sweet alyssum, bacopa, and purple lobelia. We’ve had pretty typical June weather…partly cloudy with a 60% chance of showers…which basically means anything and everything goes. I’ve been sewing, and plotting new projects. I’ve also been enjoying some good reads. Author Peter Robinson writes an intelligent mystery series. He’s a fellow Canadian, born in Britain. His stories are set in England and revolve around Chief Inspector Banks. He’s written about twenty in the series, so it’s lookin’ to be a fine summer and then some. Okay friends! Thanks ever so much for reading! ‘Til next time…

Ha! I'll admit to any age if it means I get a discount!
That tee shirt looks fresh, funky and fabulous. xxxx

  • Reply Justine of SewCountryChick June 16, 2014 at 5:45 am

Great idea using a cheap store bought item for a pattern.its so much easier than drafting or adjusting a pattern! And no you don't look anywhere near 60!

  • Reply Ruth Procter June 16, 2014 at 6:02 am

I'm never good at guessing people's ages, but you definitely don't look 60! And great idea to cut a t-shirt apart to make your own pattern – looks like it worked really well!

  • Reply opportunityknits June 16, 2014 at 6:13 am

The tshirt is really great, I love the stripes! And, you look young in it!

  • Reply Jessica Hurst June 16, 2014 at 7:15 am

Love the whole outfit! And nope. You sure don't look 60!

  • Reply M @ My Closet Catalogue June 16, 2014 at 7:33 am

60 is gonna be the new 30, m'dear, so you're just ahead of the curve. 😀

That tee is to die for and thank you for making the stripes line up! There's nothing more aggravating to a devout pattern mixer like me than to find a supercute item only to be let down because of the lack of pattern alignment. :/

OMG – someone wants to save you money! The cheek! But, my dear, you do NOT look even close to 60. I think the cashier was just trying to give away money. When I was offered the discount at Goodwill I found out the age limit was 55, and I had no problem saying YES (especially now that I'm unemployed).

Your shirt turned out beautifully! It looks great on you, but I'm really drooling over that cute little green jacket!

  • Reply Dana Bishop June 16, 2014 at 7:59 am

OK, so how do I grab ahold of enough accolades to heap on you??? Everything about this outfit radiates your creative soul. This 60 business is outlandish, especially given your less-than-50ness. I doubt if you have significantly passed 45 yet. I envy your gift with color… pulling things together as you do reflects the artist that you are.

I was at a McDonald's in Utah trying to buy a Senior Coffee. I had just turned 55. I feel like coffee drinkers in Utah stand out enough as it is. To make matters worse, the clerk behind the counter practically screamed, “Senior Coffee For Dana”. It is at times like these that I long to get my new business scheme up and running… long sleeved tees and hoodies that boldly proclaim, “PREMATURELY GRAY”.

Your pictures are visually delightful along with text that is crafted with your signature sense of humor. 🙂

I love your t shirt Sue and of course you don't look eligible for senior discount but it's good to get that first time out of the way – next time you can be a bit more quick witted and just take the discount anyway.

  • Reply pastcaring June 16, 2014 at 9:18 am

Ha, that's funny! My friend's mum, on learning that I am about to be 50, said “yes, she looks her age, doesn't she?” You look fabulous, Sue, and being amused rather than affronted at other people's foolishness is a great quality! Perhaps it is a family trait, cousin!
Love the t-shirt, it is a wonderful fit, and you look youthful and cheerful and pretty and lively in your photos, as always.
PS. I have read a lot of the Inspector Banks books too, and really enjoy them. xxxx

Great tee! Stripes are another favorite of mine. You are gorgeous Sue…always radiant.. always youthful! We all know that age is just a number…and your number, based on the energy and vitality you give off…is barely double digit! Lady you are awesome…just sayin'.

  • Reply Ripple Dandelion June 16, 2014 at 11:57 am

Oh Lord! To my eyes, you and I look around the same age. I am 45 and I would absolutely detest having this experience. Like you, I definitely hope to be 60 and look forward to it–but I'm not hurrying things along. My husband is annoyingly youthful-looking: a couple of weeks ago he was asked for identification when buying a drink.

Anyway, your whole presentation is one of vitality, fitness, optimism and joyousness. Whatever number that is, I think you look fantastic.

You look great and very girly in your tee. Of course you do not look 60! But, I have to tell you that 60 is the new 40 and kinda fabulous. I am 62 going on 43 and love when people try to guess my age.

Lovely top. One of those that get worn weekly. As for the cashier…she saw you buying one shirt for $1.99 and was trying to be nice and slip you a discount you obviously aren't eligible for. She just thought you were pinching pennies; the economy is bad and wanted to help out:) you're way too gorgeous to even think about it for another moment!

  • Reply ArgentGal June 16, 2014 at 2:18 pm

I got asked once before I was even 40! I don't think the cashier had actually looked up at me (hate that when they don't acknowledge you) and was just going on auto pilot. I will admit my “no” was laced with just a bit of indignation. The t-shirt is awesome! I sewed knits for the first time earlier this spring and it went much better than I expected. Maybe I should tackle some shirts next.

The tee is lovely. I adore the shots on the teeter-totter. They don't seem to have those in Toronto anymore. Some BS about safety or something. You look like you could be 12 in that shot ; )

I thought you bought the T-shirt at the place where they were over-polite and was wondering how they could sell such a good T-shirt for 1,99. Taking the model apart is a heck of a job, and sewing one from it too. I applaud you. Even the stripes match up nicely.
As for the comment on your age… the shop assistent must have been told off by a senior citizen who wasn't asked the discount question. And decided from then on, she would ask anybody. As you look more like 40. (Heck, you are not younger than 40 are you?)

Sue, as much as I adore you, and as clearly bat-blind and likey as stupid as the cashier was, I can't extend too much pity. There has been a bunch of whining about 60 on the blogs lately …. Patti, I'm looking at you … and we're not allowed to whine about our noses or our fat rolls or our other less than adorable traits, it seems too bad to worry about 60. Harrumph. As a bona-fide oldie, when you young 'uns whine about it, it dilutes all your assurances that you all gave us that 60 isn't that old when we made the jump from middle aged to ancient.
Seriously, though, I get why you don't want to be hurried into the One Foot In the Grave Decade. Ack.
It says much more about me than her when I hazzard a guess that she was just being nasty, and offered it because you are clearly such a cutie spring chic, much younger looking than your years. I don't think she thought for a moment that you were anywhere near 60, and was just being a cow.
Sue, knowing that you don't have a get-even bone in your body, I wish I was there to make her sorry she embarrassed you. See? You even feel sorry for her, you sweet child!

Ok, I'll be honest, this happened to me last week when I was with my son and he just about lost it laughing so hard. i simply looked at the cute checker and said, 'Not yet” but I'm the cutest senior you've seen in a long time, right?” Now, that really got my son laughing even harder.
Now for the tee, you clever lady, you. Absolutely love this stripe tee and the combination you put together, you are the youngest at heart!

We in The Netherlands are labeled “50+”, older people etc. after 55, but I think the discount starts at 65.
But the baby boomers and the ones following them will change the perception of getting older!!! YEAH.

Oh, and just so you know, I was trying to figure out how old you were before I saw this post. I am 40 and I kept thinking, “She can't be much older than me”. So when you said you were 53 I almost fell off my chair! You look amazing:)
