A Colourful Canvas, Vogue Pattern V2958, Simplicity Pattern 8575, Palazzo Pants, Project Sewn,

Have you ever driven past a muffler shop, or maybe a discount furniture store and seen those super tall inflatable air dancers? Errr, that would be yours truly in more than a few photos of me wearing my latest make. Not exactly the look I was going for, LOL. Just a whisper of a sea breeze and I was nearly airborne. But! I DO love these palazzo pants. Now, you know I love prints as much as ten times more than the next person, but I was a little hesitant when it came to sewing my first pair of wide legged pants. Clocking in at under 5’2″, I’m well aware that not every runway look is suitable for my short stature. Could I? Should I? Palazzo pants have been tempting me for quite some time…ikat, flowery, dotty…I love them all. I just wasn’t sure if they would love me back. Fate intervened when I spotted Vogue Pattern V2958 in my local Value Village. I didn’t hesitate. The pale blue lightweight cotton shirting had been languishing in my stash. At $2.00 a meter, it was the right choice for what could quite possibly be an epic fail. The blouse I made out of the same fabric to further create the illusion of length. I cautiously love the results…both the pants and the blouse are super comfortable, and I think I’m okay silhouette-wise, providing the weather conditions are cooperative. Yes! I think my experiment was/is a success! I’m already plotting my next pair. Yes. I. Am. Printed. Colourful. Coming. Soon.

This outfit felt just right for the seaside. Pale, watery blue shades, fluid lines, and mother of pearl buttons on the blouse. And to top it all off, a vintage 1960’s sailor hat recently purchased from lovely Bella’s Etsy shop, Citizen Rosebud Fresh Picked Vintage. Thank you so much Bella!

Oops! You’re right if you said there is no difference. Two right bodice backs, my bad. Things were going merrily along until I made a goof, with scissors, and I had to cut a new bodice back piece. There was almost, nearly, not enough fabric to do so. But I squeaked out just enough, and because I was on a roll, I then proceeded to sew the bodice back to the bodice side back wrong sides together…and Ta Da! Two right backs. Seam ripping righted the wrong, but really! Really? Sheesh!

You look like a tall drink of water! Huzzah for monochrome and expert sewing skills! How is it that you make all your handmade pieces look so clean and sharp and manufactured? And how funny is it that what used to be a derogatory term – “Manufactured? All my clothing is bespoke, dahling!” – has now become the expected standard for quality.

Non seqitur: what font do you use for your photo captions? It's driving me batty and I MUST know!

  • Reply Dana Bishop May 29, 2014 at 5:20 am

You look absolutely smashing in your new ensemble. I love your prints but this choice of solid shirting screams summer fun at the shore! You are such a top notch seamstress. I agree with M above… Your work never looks hand made in the negative sense of the word. When I wear something I've sewn, I am invariably asked, “Did you make that?”

  • Reply Suzanne Carillo Style Files May 29, 2014 at 5:35 am

Wow this is such a different look for you. I need to let my eyes adjust ; ) So calm and tranquil and dare I say it…normally NOT Sue. Glad that funky hat is there otherwise I might not recognize you.

I love how you describe yourself. Those inflatable air dancers always freak me out. Someone needs to make a horror movie out of them. But they need to change the name from “air dancers” to “air stalkers”. Then at the end…just when someone is about to get killed…the last victim figures it out and shuts off the air and the air stalker crumples to the ground, looking like some sorry heap of old plastic garbage bags.

I seem to have gotten slightly side-tracked here ; )

Okay my eyes have adjusted to the non colour and non vibrancy of this retro design. I adore the top. It reminds me of a retro peplum. The little details are gorgeous and I can where they might get lost if it were a patterned fabric. I can really see the top paired with a piece a little more form fitting on the bottom, a pencil skirt, fitted jeans, or skinnies and ballet flats. Really reminds me of something Audrey Hepburn might have worn.

The pants…they are Katherine Hepburn all the way. While I don't mind them at all I kind of wish they were in a very light flowy fabric, like silk or ummm….name another fabric that is light and flowy ; ) as a non sewer I don't know these kind of things.

The entire ensemble really does create a decisive look though and I'm sure you created quite a stir on the beach when taking the photos. I would have to agree that it is a success and I can't wait to see your next pair of patterned palazzo pants. I'm envisioning flowers and colour… : )

    bisous
    Suzanne

I'm with Suzanne – I LOATHE those “air dancer” freaky things. They creep me out.

However, I LOVE your outfit! I would never have guessed you are 5'2″.

Never mind blogging…it's clear that your true talent is screen writing. 😉

See…I can do quiet. Of course, now that I've done quiet…I am anxious to give cray-cray a try! Silk would be gorgeous, as long as I didn't sit on anything, or stand too close to anyone. But, I totally know what you mean by light, flowy fabric…maybe a cotton voile, but I think even that won't create quite *the* look!

I wore the top with skinnies yesterday…Yikes, I guess I'm channeling you now! Lucky ME!

Thanks for the silhouette tips! You've got such a good eye and I really value your feedback.

hahaha…that is so true. We wear RTW and hanker for handmade couture. We wear handmade and hope it looks RTW. We be women Maricel…maybe that's it?

Must not have you going batty…my photo captions are Amatic Small Caps. Feel better?

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas May 29, 2014 at 7:57 am

Thanks Dana! Four simple words enough to crush a seamstress to the ground. I've had years of practice towards getting the emphasis on the *right* word in this statement.

Good that you reject your doubts, Sue, the look is perfect! With the small waisted top and the high wedges you found the perfect silhouette for your palazzo pants. You look beautiful!
Your outdoor pics are always a great pleasure, the wind in this case is acts like an accessoire making them even more autentic.

Well, I don't cautiously love this outfit, Sue – I wholeheartedly, absolutely adore it! Bella's right, there's a fabulous 1930s vibe to it, so chic. And yes, now for a print version, that will look great. Brilliant, Cousin Sue! xxx

Very cute! And what is great is that both pieces can be mixed and matched with so many other things too. Love that you got such a deal on so much of what you incorporated in this outfit.

Your error looks like something I would do 🙂 Glad you had enough fabric. My seam ripper is my best friend too.

Lovely, so summery and my you look tall in them! They do work to elongate your figure. I'm even shorter than you I just scrape 5ft so don't think they are for me, but you look excellent. And can I just say I love your toes! So cute.

I think this “suit” is terrific. It looks ever so good on you. It is like a jumpsuit but much better shaped. You elongated yourself, the style is flattering. Beautiful. (Just stay out of the wind haha.)
Now you are sewing one in print….. well, I have to say that I am a bit apprehensive about that. For anybody, being small or large. But it all depends on the print. So I am looking forward to see it.
As for stitching the wrong sides together… been there, done that (more than once). Just lack of concentration.

Forgot to say that Bella's hat looks fantastic on your head. Not everybody can wear this. You definitely can. It is so much fun with your “jumpsuit”.

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas May 30, 2014 at 9:22 am

The dots are easy, and they hide a sloppy application. I use a dotting tool, that you can probably find in the nail polish section for a dollar or two. Thanks for complimenting the montage. I'm having some fun with graphics and design.

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas May 30, 2014 at 9:29 am

Thanks Greetje! I know! I know! There is a real big chance that it will be all kinds of wrong. Now, it will only be the pants with maybe a plain white top? I'm still thinking on that. One of the things with reading blogs is that sometimes you can't tell if people are stick thin and 6' tall. You just see their outfits and love them and want to wear them. But in blogging, I am starting to learn how some silhouettes are great, and how some just do not work. Of course, with sewing, you have to go to the trouble of making the garment before really knowing, but I'm going to give it a try. For sure, I will count on your honest opinion! xo

You just proved to us shorties that we CAN wear wide leg pants. Yes, I love rule breakers in fashion. Even though you look impeccable in yours, I still don't think I have the ability to wear them well. My thighs would cause them to hike up. The very reason why I don't wear fuller shorts.

Sue, I love the shirting and the palazzos…actually my favorite style! You look terrific! I'm dying to know how long it takes, start to finish on one of your stitched outfits. I feel like it takes me forever to complete something!

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas June 1, 2014 at 8:46 pm

Hi Crystal, Oh, it's so difficult to answer how long it takes me to make an outfit. Often, in all seriousness, it takes the longest time for me to make a decision on what to sew and with what fabric. I can go back and forth on that for hours, {while I am doing other things of course}. I enjoy participating in online sewalongs that have parameters or themes; they help narrow down all those sewing possibilities. And again, the more tweaks or alterations I do to a pattern, the more time it takes. That can be a few hours, again allowing for time to just walk away. But, once the cutting has begun, I zip along fairly quickly. And! If I'm sewing a pattern that I've made before like this top, I can usually have it mostly finished in an afternoon, not counting hand sewing hems or buttons. It does really depend on what kind of work is involved. But there is no right or wrong length of time. I have found that now I am older, I enjoy the process as much as the finished garment.
