Going Dotty for My Charlie Caftan : : Closet Case Patterns : : #2018MakeNine

Hiya everyone. I’m checking in today with one of my #2018MakeNine sewing makes. This is my sixth out of nine! In my original #2018MakeNine blog post, I had this fabric pegged for either a Charlie Caftan or a Penny Dress by Colette. Given that my first Charlie Caftan, blogged here, was my most worn summer item last year, the scales were tipped in favour of another easy, breezy, polka dotty caftan. And. Just for fun. I made some changes to the pattern. Ahem…actually…quite a few, but I’m sure this no longer surprises you. Okay….as you can see, I’ve made some tweaks to the bodice, most noticeably the inset (image top right). It’s not there. To be clear. I like the inset. I think it’s a lovely design feature. But! As I wrote in my post last year,…

My Highlands Wrap Dress : : An Allie Olson of IndieSew Pattern

Hallo, hallo. When asked to describe my personal style my usual answer is classic with a twist. My use of the word classic refers to the silhouettes I most often gravitate to…trousers, jeans, t-shirts, button up shirts, shirt dresses; garments whose design lines are easily recognizable, known and understood. And the twist? Why you know I love me a pop of colour, or an unexpected pattern combination. All well and good that…but…I cannot relegate my style choices to a single box. Nor would I ever want to. Experimenting with personal style….playing dress up…isn’t just fun.  I think it’s a path towards rediscovering personality traits that may have been intentionally downplayed at various points in our lives.  As my life experience grows, my sense of self strengthens.  It is important to me that my clothing supports…

My Jenny Overalls : : Closet Case Patterns : : Dressing For My Personality

Hey peeps. Back…as promised…and modelling my Jenny Overalls from  Closet Case Patterns. I patterned tested for Heather a few months ago, sewing two muslins in the process.  Unlike other testing I’ve done, I used inexpensive muslin fabric for my makes…because, well…that never ending debate about whether one should or should not wear overalls after the age of…I dunno….six?  To be clear,  I wanted to make the overalls. But…insert pensive expression here…I was just really unsure if I was going to be able to pull off the look. I’ve long said that I dress to suit my personality and…after some contemplation…I committed myself to making the overalls version.  Okay…full disclosure…it wasn’t just contemplation. I emailed style mavens Heather (Closet Case Patterns) Suzanne (Suzanne Carillo) and Melanie (Bag and a Beret) and asked their opinions. They…

My York Pinafore : : A Helen’s Closet Pattern

Well hiya guys. I’ve got a couple of blog posts either ready to roll or close to so let’s jump right in… Helen {that’d be Helen’s Closet} has released a new pattern…The York Pinafore. It’s fun. It’s easy. It’s playful. I got in early with this make as a pattern tester….and I’ve been wearing it frequently on the QT. It’s already become a warm weather favourite. No fuss. Cool. Nonrestrictive.  Wear it with a tee or a tank…even over your swimsuit. And that’s just spring/summer styling. I can totally see myself wearing the York with a turtleneck bodysuit and leggings in autumn. But…please….let’s not rush things…we’ve not yet arrived at summer here in lovely, green Vancouver. I pattern tested View A…large scooped patch pockets, deep neckline and knee length. View B is shorter, has a…
