ACE OF CLUBS…

Oooh…I’ve been Spy Girled…and I love it!  Thanks Anne!  For those not in the know, Anne blogs  over at Spy Girl.  She’s a print lover like me, and she’s found a niche career in designing prints for underwear.  Painting is her passion, and her art is mesmerizing.  I encourage you to pop over and check out her work!

Appropriately enough, it’s awards season throughout the blogosphere.  And…drum roll please…I have had the honor of having a couple of coveted awards sent my way.  The ever so elegant Suzanne of Suzanne Carillo Style Files bestowed upon me, the Golden Blog Award, with the caveat that I reveal ten random facts about myself.  Her facts, here, are very interesting, and if you’ve not yet met Suzanne, this is the perfect moment to visit her and get to know her better.   I also received A Shine On award from both Maricel of My Closet Catalogue and Seeker of Searching The Inner Me.  Thank you lovely ladies!  Okay, the Shine On reward only asks for seven facts to be revealed, so I’m a gonna go with lucky seven today.  The real deal?  It’s my moment to dish a little about myself, {as if I don’t ramble on about me with every post I publish}.   All righty, without further adieu, here is my list of random facts about me.

1. I’ve owned a grand total of three vehicles in my lifetime…a totally retro orange 1972 Toyota Corolla 1600 exactly as seen in one of Toyota’s recent ads, a 1974 Special Edition Super Beetle Gold Sunbug and a 1990 white Miata.  When I learned to drive, my options were learning on a standard shift vehicle, or not learning…I’ve been driving a standard shift ever since.  I’d totally kill it on Amazing Race.  I thought I was cool when I had the Toyota, I was cool when I had my Sunbug, and some might think I’m pathetically reaching for cool now that I drive a Miata.

2. I was pondering why mystery books are my favourite genre…pretty much the only type of fiction I read…let’s see?  Maybe because as a child, I devoured every single Bobbsey Twin book and the entire Nancy Drew series at least once.  And I’m pretty certain I read my share of Hardy Boys tales on a hot summer’s day too.

3. I have a certificate in Flower Essence Therapy, and I use them daily.
4. If you were at Marineland of the Pacific in August 1968, and you witnessed a child with her head stuck between the bars of a fence, that would have been me.  Yep!  Maintenance had to be called, and the aluminum post had to be cut in order to extract my big head.  What can I say…I was curious.

5. I do not watch the news. Haven’t since September 1993. At times, I feel a bit like an ostrich with my head in the sand, but I’m a happier person for it.  ‘Nuf said.

6. I love our city’s annual fair, but I don’t do rides!  Hmmm…maybe not so good at Amazing Race.

7. I work in the natural health field in an administrative capacity.  It’s official!  I’m a health nut!

Okay, I’ve dished!  Now it’s your turn.  Yes it’s true, I’m supposed to nominate, I don’t know…ten, twenty, fifty…deserving people for either a Shine On award or a Golden Blog Award. The truth of the matter is that many of you are podium shy and prefer to remain seated in the viewing audience. But, you know what?  I’d love to read even just one thing about each of you that maybe I didn’t know before.   Tell me in a comment, tell me in an email, {now that could be a juicy tidbit there, eh?} or tell me in a blog post!  Please, please, I wanna know!

One last thing…voting is open at Project Sewn for the final sew-along.  If you so desire, click here to pop over and vote for your favourite entry.  Mine is in the seventh row, second from the right.  Simply click on the heart at the top corner of your chosen entrant’s photo.

***VOTING is now CLOSED***

Won’t you please follow me on…

Hey! That was my favorite entry, too.

Connie, I feel as though I've just been hugged. xo

You so deserve all these awards and more – you are such a sunny and creative soul! Spy Girl is so very talented – you look groovy here!!

I am with you – no news for me in any form (TV, computer, newspaper etc) since 2005 or even earlier, can't remember. I once learned that there was a new president of Russian elected (or something like that) about a year after it happened. I was very surprised that A) it happened, and B) it did not affect my existence a tiny bit!

It's cool to be your own person and live in your own universe which you create one day at a time. Cheers! 🙂

I watching the news right now! Then I'm going to go vote for you. But first I'll tell you that my middle name used to be Sue! When I got married and took my husband's last name, I moved my maiden name to be my middle name.

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas February 28, 2014 at 7:01 pm

Ah, a lady that understands what I'm talking about…thanks for your sweet comment Natalia!

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas February 28, 2014 at 7:02 pm

Now this is what I'm talking about! A few minutes ago, I had no idea that your middle name used to be Sue! And now, we're like Sisters of the Name Sue!

  • Reply Suzanne Carillo Style Files February 28, 2014 at 7:53 pm

    Just voted!

No wonder you are so happy and positive.

I drove a 1968 convertible Karmann Ghia cherry red for about 3 years when I was in my late teens. I had to sell my baby when I was overseas so I could keep travelling.

Oh, and my nickname my Grandma called me when I was a kid was Suzy-Q.

Good luck in the competition sister Sue!

    bisous
    Suzanne

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas February 28, 2014 at 10:22 pm

Oooh, special! Karmann Ghia's were pretty rare, even years back. I can totally see you bombing around in it with long blonde hair streaming.

And Yes! You are definitely part of the Sue sisterhood Suzy-Q!

    Thanks for the vote!

Great sketch from Anne, and well done on the awards. When I was given similar awards, I told a bunch of lies; I did admit it, the test was to pick out the one true fact among the fibs. I am useless at doing my homework and playing by the rules!
You have my vote, Sue! xxx

  • Reply Flo March 1, 2014 at 5:20 am

The drawing rocks, too cool!!!! You and I can be partners on The Amazing Race, I too can drive a stick shift. I made myself learn by ordering a brand new 1984 Honda CRX 5 speed, had two lessons before it arrived. It was interesting, but I did it, and I've always been very glad I did. Since then I've had two Honda Civics and a Mini Cooper that were all stick shift. I can't imagine not knowing how to drive one.

Hmmmm…….something that no one knows about me…………..well, while I look like someone who would probably listen to Celine Dion, Mariah Carey, etc–I'm rock and roll girl at heart. AC/DC, Metallica, the harder the rock, the better!!!

  • Reply Anonymous March 1, 2014 at 9:00 am

I do not remember the fence incident!! great memory!!

  • Reply Kezzie March 1, 2014 at 9:37 am

The sketch is super! I also don't watch the news. I had no idea about what was going on in Syria or Egypt until months afterwards. I also don't read newspapers (apart from the occasional free one on the train). Oh dear, the fence is quite funny!!! X

  • Reply Kezzie March 1, 2014 at 9:38 am

I also adore mystery books and loved all those and the Emission Buxton ones. Have you read Georgette Heyer's ones? X

  • Reply M. Edwards March 1, 2014 at 9:51 am

Ha! I love how all the bloggers I follow – and trust me that this is a carefully curated bunch because I just don't have time/energy to be an indiscriminate follower – end up being true soul sisters. That's why I love these awards. And why I love giving them to those I admire. ;p

I, too, do not follow the news. It makes me woefully ignorant, but Bob's your uncle.

We both know about our shared love for Nancy Drew and Bobbsey Twins. Never got into the Hardy Boys, though, but I did read my fair share of Miss Marple.

You have me beat by 1 car (I've only had 4 in my lifetime; I'm assuming hubby's cars don't count) but I am with you on a stick shift; my dad said he wouldn't teach us how to drive unless we all learned on a standard.

And of course I voted for you! Good luck and here's hoping you kill the competition! 😀

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas March 1, 2014 at 12:10 pm

OMG…that's hilarious Curtise! I may just have to send you an award to get you to do it again, 😉

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas March 1, 2014 at 12:12 pm

Flo!!! A rocker chic? That is a gem of information, thank you for sharing! Congratulations on only needing two lessons for driving standard. When I see Minis on the road, I am tempted to get one. They are so fun!

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas March 1, 2014 at 12:12 pm

Some things I'd rather forget, LOL!

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas March 1, 2014 at 12:13 pm

I find people are always eager to share news, not that I'm particularly receptive, LOL.

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas March 1, 2014 at 12:14 pm

Now you have me intrigued. I'm always looking for new titles, and British cozies are favourites. I have not read Emission Buxton or Georgette Heyers, but I will quickly check my library website to see if I can get a hold of any of these. Thanks!!!

  • Reply Sue @ A Colourful Canvas March 1, 2014 at 12:16 pm

Whoa!!! We are indeed kindred spirits! Did you read Anne of Green Gables? Almost required reading here in Canada, and a series very dear to my heart….okay, I have ventured beyond mysteries. And, nope…hubby's cars don't count, so we are pretty close to the same car count, as if that has any real meaning….yuk, yuk, yuk!

  • Reply Rebecca March 1, 2014 at 7:11 pm

Oh my goodness that picture of you is gorgeous! I love that printed coat you made and this picture shows its beauty perfectly! So enjoyed reading some facts about you! Such a cute story about you getting your head stuck in a fence!! 🙂

Just voted for you, hope you win! Interesting to learn more about you. Flower Essence Therapy, I'd love to learn more about this. Is it Aroma Therapy like they do at Aveda?
The black shoes in my post are from JCPenney, on sale of around $20 right now. I couldn't find them online but I thought I'd let you know because they are a great deal!

  • Reply No fear of fashion March 5, 2014 at 2:12 am

Congratulations on your well-deserved awards! I love to hear all these revelations. Like you I reveal a lot about myself in my posts anyway and others do as well, but still there are surprises.
Like you, I do not read newspapers or watch the news. I am too sensitive for that, it makes me sick to my stomach. I hear the big things on the radio news and sometimes even have to turn that off as well.
I had never heard of a Miata, so I looked up a picture…lovely car, very cool.
Here are some more facts about me people might know or not: I have had plastic surgery done to my eyelids, the bottom part of my face and some sucking of my waist. All “nip tuck” work. No fillings or such. My genes are not very kind, I was getting to look a lot older than my age and decided to do something about it.
Fact two: I cannot stand injustice, its gets me furious. As there is a lot of injustice around, especially at work, I get furious a lot. Really a lot. This year I have decided my mantra is: (be) positive. And I am trying not to give in to my fits anymore. So far so good (it is only the beginning of March, but still…).
Your drawing by Anne is fantastic. Isn't she wonderful to dish out presents like that?

These Anne masterpieces are so amazing, and especially because they're you, our Amazing Sue. Excellent of the ladies to nominate you … drawing you out a bit is a great favor to the rest of us.
(And, by the by, “rambling on” about yourself is part of why you're supposed to write these blogs in the first place. Lest you feel like you shouldn't … you really should. Always.)
Some of your info I've inferred from bits and pieces you've mentioned in the past, and lovely to know more. Interesting, your choice in cars. If you're at all like me, then finances always play a part, but how wonderful it is to feel a little cool with your ultimate choice!
Seaworld, 1968 … it is impossible not to see you as you are right now with your head stuck. Sorry … can't get the picture to go away! Poor baby.
I admire your staunch refusal to let the news bring you down. I'm a junkie, so is Dan, and I can't say the habit makes me happier. I'm angry a lot of the time, and have to take steps to not let that hurt me. You are probably a lot better off.
I don't do the rides, either. I'm not so much afraid of the experience of the ride itself, but I fear the mechanisms and their safety. I'd hate for the last choice on earth I made would end with my dying for the sake of a cheap thrill ! Or anyone I'd surely drag with me.
Love this, Sue. Yours is one of the best blogs around, 'cause you're a simply stellar girl yourself!

  • Reply popcosmo March 6, 2014 at 4:48 pm

Oh, what fun to read this! How is it you got your head through the fence, but couldn't get it back out? Funny all these years later, but I can't imagine at the time. And I love how your references are all about the Amazing Race! We do the same in our family. When someone isn't good at the directions, we choose another partner, haha! I could do everything except go up high, ride a ride or be in a tight space. Um, nobody wants me as a partner to say the least!! Plus, I'm pretty much a klutz and like my sleep. But it seems like SO much fun!
And I'm definitely checking out the person who drew you- it's amazing!!!

I'm still on my first car, but I've only had a driver's license since 2009, so that's not terribly impressive. I don't watch the news either, and from what I've heard of others, it's an oft-used “happy” strategy. Simply knowing about tons of bad things that are happening and not being able to do anything to help…which seems to be the main theme of the news, is not terribly helpful.

  • Reply two birds March 10, 2014 at 8:38 am

i couldn't agree with you more about watching the news (or not watching it). i hate it…it's filled with horrible stuff!

  • Reply Trina March 18, 2014 at 2:31 pm

Random thoughts are the best! Such a fun way to get a better glimpse into your fun personality and life. For some odd reason, I rarely pick up mystery books now but I did read every Nancy Drew book and can still remember sitting with a flashlight in my bed so I wouldn't get caught reading (as a child) clear into the late night. Which mysteries do you recommend? I'm now on my way to add my vote!

What a great portrait of you! i can't believe I'm just now seeing this, Sue. Laughing my head off over Marineland. Curious soul! Interesting/little known facts about me: I played Tom Sawyer, the lead, in the 8th grade play. That plus my flat chest assured that I wouldn't have a boyfriend until my junior year of high school–but I had to move away for that to happen
