Whoop whoop. I've been following the March #sewaju Whoop whoop. I've been following the March #sewajumpsuitchallenge hosted by Eli @slowsewed and Pauline @sewuthinkucan and I managed to finish my jumpsuit before the challenge closes! And lemme tell you, this 'lil jumpsuit was a bit of a challenge, but it's here in all its gingham linen glory. The pattern is a mash-up of the #reynoldstop by @helenscloset and the #closetcoreamy by @closetcorepatterns And yes, I pattern tweaked. A lot. I did a very cute, very wearable muslin of the Reynolds top as a start. For the jumpsuit version, I shortened and nipped in the waist with front and back darts. By necessity I added a short invisible zip at the center back. I also added a button side placket which I love. The bottom of the jumpsuit is Amy but I added matching front and back darts, continued the side button placket and added front slash pockets. I ran into troubles at the neckline. Probably the one area I wasn't anticipating any hiccups because my muslin was so perfect. I think the linen fabric stretched because I have a neckline gaping issue front and back? For now, I've sewn in a length of piping along the neckline which really helps, but it isn't quite the vision I had. Sigh, I think my fabric choice was not ideal. I think I want to sew this again, but use a slightly weightier, crisper fabric...and then I'll probably have to slim down the legs a lot...and then....LOL, my hamster wheel brain just keeps spinning. 😂 Thanks Eli and Pauline. I've found a lot of fresh inspo from the hashtag and your accounts! #sewover50 #vancouversews #canadasews
Hallo...@sewover50 is hosting a fun little challen Hallo...@sewover50 is hosting a fun little challenge; the #so50TnT All we need do is post a favourite tried and true pattern with a minimum of three makes...new photos not required. For me, it's the #closetcoresasha I've been sewing this pattern since its inception. Love them all and there will always be a place in my wardrobe for this classic silhouette! #sewover50 #sewoverageism #closetcorepatterns #sashatrousers #vancouversews #canadasews
Howdy....I think I have a thing for overalls. Gimm Howdy....I think I have a thing for overalls. Gimme all the patterns. 😂 Or. Just let me wear my Otis Overalls every day. Incredibly comfortable, the right amount of whimsical and not difficult to sew. Otis' unique design features include a lantern shaped cuff, pouch pockets...you will not want for pockets; there are 6 of them, all roomy...and a rear view that includes a gathered back waist and criss-cross straps. I did a couple of quick mods. One was to switch out the drawstring tie for elastic. I added a short length of tie at the center to give the appearance of a drawstring waist. This makes them super easy to put on and take off. I also opted to fully face the lantern cuffs. EDIT: Credit for the elastic waist mod goes to @jeannekedotcom Thanks Jeanneke! I sewed the size 0, shortening them 1" at the bib, rise 1.25", legs 1/5". Note: I added 3.75" to the straps and they are perfect for me. I used what has become a favourite fabric...mid blue denim chambray, about 6oz from @spoolofthread Would I sew again? Yes, absolutely! Pattern: #otisoveralls

People! I made the Arthur Pants from @sewliberated People! I made the Arthur Pants from @sewliberated in collaboration with @specksandkeepings and I am smitten. They are so much fun and I get happy comments about them all the time. I'm happy, strangers are happy...it's one big happy party. In my previous post, I shared big sleeves. Now I'm wearing balloon pants. What is happening to me? 🤣It's been fun, this playing with volume, but I will say this about that...I don't jump right in with these silhouettes. I muslined my Arthur Pants using an old sheet and I did make some changes to better suit my 5'1" frame. Obvs, I shortened the pattern...I shortened it a total of 5 1/4" over three places, 2.5" in the rise, 1.5" and 1.25" in the legs and a 7/8" hem. I also narrowed the outside side seams. I redrew the curve starting at the widest point of the legs (about my knees), down to the hemline for a total of 7/8" narrower at the hem than the original specs. I did this front and back pattern pieces. Because I have lost my bum...and where the heck it went I do not know...I curved out the back crotch to more closely match the Otis Overalls (another post coming on those gems). I also added belt loops and eliminated the extended flap on the waist band. The loops aren't necessary; the Arthur Pants come with a forgiving elastic back waistband, but I often like to style my pants with a belt. Speaking of styling...what seems to be working best for me is volume on either the top or bottom. Today, I'm wearing a favourite Jeanne Ready To Sew T shirt. Fabric is a coral cotton twill, about 6oz, purchased from local fabric store Save-On Fabrics. Okay, I gotta ask...is this silhouette calling your name? If it is...I recommend this pattern. The drafting and instructions are very good. I did, however, use a different method to apply the zipper and waistband. I find these are potentially the tricky bits of sewing pants and if I stick to one TNT method I have better successes. Pattern: #arthurpants

How are we feeling about big sleeves? I resisted, How are we feeling about big sleeves? I resisted, thinking they might be too much for my small size. Also....I don't generally feel drawn to the soft, floaty, romantic vibe that a gathered garment gives. Yet here I am wearing an Anthea Blouse by Anna Allen Clothing and loving it. (I'm also wearing a pair of #persephonepants but that's another post.) If you're on the fence, this just might be the pattern for you. I think the design is brilliant. The sleeves have lovely volume...BUT I don't feel like I'm drowning in fabric. The sleeves are set in; not too high and not too low...perfect for layering under a menswear inspired vest. I have a very comfortable range of movement. The bodice is drafted in an A-Line silhouette...so there is comparitively less volume in the upper bodice than at the waist. I think the blouse looks good both tucked in or out. I sized down one size because I was....scared. I didn't want anything too...too twee, too poufy, too frilly. As a result I ended up sewing the side seams at 3/8" rather than the intended 5/8". Um yah, I could have sewn my size and I suggest you do too. That said, thie finishrd blouse fits like a dream and I really don't think I'll print off, tape, and cut out another in one size up. Howdy. I haven't posted in a long time and I'm not Howdy. I haven't posted in a long time and I'm not mad about it. 🤣 I have been sewing and creating and generally living a lower tech life. It's all good. I may not miss the technology but I do miss you, so I've dusted off my camera and once again set up a small corner in my dining room/sewing room for taking photos of my makes. Sigh, the battery in my camera ran out in two minutes, my garments were wrinkled...I was tired before even getting started. 🤣 But people. I got this. In lieu of a selfie, I'm sharing this photo as an appetizer. I'm always incredibly inspired by @blakandblanca 's sewing journal photos....you are too, right? A short while back I decided to try documenting my makes in a similar fashion. It's a far cry from my usual scribbles on the pattern, or worse; on scraps of paper that either get lost or become meaningless. How can something be so fun and yet so practical? For me, it's another way to slow down my sewing output without feeling like I'm silencing my creative expression. I'm curious how you document your sewing notes, so please share or just say Hi. PS Are the dots intended to be on the outside? #slowsewing #sewover50 #antheablouse #vancouversews #annaallenclothing
